September 2005: visiting Apala’s camp for displaced people, in Lira district, north Uganda
In September 2005, we had the good fortune to visit Uganda. During this stay, facilitated by Arapa Boniface, a priest in the region, we visited the Apala Camp for Internally Displaced People, close to the troubled region bordering Sudan. After over 20 years of conflict inflicted by the Lord’s Resistance Army, based in southern Sudan, millions of people have fled their villages and have been living in refugee camps. A million were living in Apala alone when we visited.
It was a touching experience. The people lived in comunity, trying to cover each others necessities the best way possible. One hospital for the children and health centre run by a single nurse were the only healthcare facilities. Two wellls provided water. Though not a place of extreme poverty, the difficulties were obvious. The laughter of the children was the most touching part of visiting the camp.
How we decided to help
We realised we could not be indifferent. After talking to friends in Portugal, who were touched by our experience, we decided to pay for the fees and school materials for seven children from the camp, who otherwise would not have access to education. The money gathered is sent every term (January, May and September) to Fr Boniface, who is responsible for the children and manages the payment of the costs. For each child, per year, about 220 Euro are required; all receipts are sent to us by post. This has worked well for nearly two years already.
We take this opportunity to ask you to consider also helping. Every little does it: whatever amount, either as a regular contribution or a single donation. As an informal group, we cannot issue any legal document acknowledging your donation. We can only thank you for trusting us.
